People often ask me what my most important piece of advice would be for someone who is soon to start training their pet dog. In my view there are many things that need to be taken into account. These are my top five thoughts on this:

Initially, I always suggest that a dog training manual is used. The need for this is that there are loads of canine training myths on the internet that it can be quite easy to be led down the wrong path and cause yourself more problems in the long run.

Second, I always advise that you do not get frustrated with the dog as this can be a negative experience. At this moment your dog is probably not being naughty at all but just does not understand what you are asking of him.

Third, you need to remain clam and spend some quality time with your dog having first studied your dog training manual. Remember Rome was not built in a day. It is all about taking small steps and building on each small positive result.

Fourthly, make sure you build obedience into your dogs schedule with you. You can always have a go at the commands whilst carrying out your daily tasks for instance whilst hanging your washing up you could practice getting your dog to ‘stay’ at a distance from you.

Finally, when starting to train your dog you need to identify what it is that will give him the most pleasure as a reward. Maybe a popular squeaky toy to play with, heaps of praise from you or a rawhide. It is really important that you get this off pat especially when you are at the beginning so that you have a means to encourage him.

I hope the above words help you with your dog training remember it is an anxious time in any event due to the fact that you are both finding your feet with each other. As long as you keep the above advice in focus and reference your dog training manual there is no reason why this cannot be the start to a fulfilling relationship.
